Portlaoise
Portlaoise is the county town of County Laois and is situated on the junction of the M7 Dublin/Limerick and N8 Dublin/Cork National primary Routes and on the N80, which connects Portlaoise to Rosslare Ferry port and to west.
The opening of the M7 Monasterevan bye-pass connects Portlaoise to Dublin within an hour. Portlaoise boasts of an excellent 230-seater theatre (1999) a five-screen cinema (2001), multistory car park (2000) numerous restaurants, pubs and cafes, shopping centres, street shopping, schools, churches, golf, sporting facilities, hill walking and other excellent amenities.
County Laois is serviced by its General Hospital, which specialises in maternity and pediatrics as well as acute psychiatric care. Its central location gives Portlaoise ready access to various third level institutions in Dublin and other cities while Carlow IT and Athlone IT are also convenient.
