Animal By Products and you

The use or disposal of ABP is strictly controlled. This is to protect both public and animal health. If you are involved with ABP you must follow all appropriate rules and regulations.

Regulations of ABP

The regulation of ABP is handled by a number of bodies:

  • Department of Agriculture Fisheries and Food: Responsible for most ABP processing plants and the largest meat plants.
  • Sea-Fisheries Protection Authority: Responsible for marine ABP.
  • Local Authority Veterinary Service: Responsible for ABP issues in smaller local abattoirs.
  • Health Service Executive: Responsible for retail outlets, e.g. butchers.
