Advance Notice of Intent to Import

Intra Community Trade

In accordance with EU and National rules at least 24 hours notice of intent to import animal(s) / product(s) of animal origin should be given. The form VET 1 (xls 20Kb) is used for this purpose. The form may be photocopied or copied onto a word-processor for future use. Please note:

  • In respect of the import of animal products from other Member States of the EU notification should be forwarded by fax or post to Food Safety Liaison Division, Department of Agriculture & Food, Kildare Street, Dublin 2, Fax No: 01-6072513. The Form VET1 should be forwarded at least at least 24 hours before the arrival of the animals products
  • Notification of import of live animals from another Member State should also be made by means of the VET 1 form. In this case however it should be forwarded to Animal Health and Welfare Division Department of Agriculture & Food, Kildare Street, Dublin 2 (Fax No: 01-6619031) as well as to the port/airport of entry at least 24 hours before arrival.

Third Country Imports

An importer must give at least 24 hours notice of intent to import Animals / Products from Third Countries to the EU approved Border Inspection Post (BIP) at the port or airport through which it is intended to import the animals or animal products. This is done by completing and forwarding Part 1 of the relevant CVED form (Common Veterinary Entry Document), in advance of importation, to the BIP of first entry into the EU. These are requirements under the provisions of Regulation 5 (2) of the European Communities (Importation of Animals and Animal Products From Third Countries) Regulations, 1994 (S.I. No.255 of 1994) in so far as it refers to live animals and under Regulation 5 (2) of the European Communities (Veterinary Checks on Products Imported from Third Countries ) Regulations, 2000 ( S.I. No. 292 of 2000 ) and Commission Regulation (EC) No 136/2004 and Commission Regulation (EC) No 282/2004.
