Bioproteins

The Directive on Bioproteins (82/471/EEC) (pdf 555Kb) was introduced to regulate non-conventional sources of animal proteins used to feed animals. e.g. proteins derived from micro-organisms, non-protein nitrogenous products (urea), amino acids and analogs of amino acids.

Like feed additives, a product falling within the scope of the Directive may not be fed to animals unless it is specifically authorized in the Annex (page 10 of above Directive) of the Directive. The main products currently authorized and used in animal nutrition are brewer's and distiller's yeasts and amino acids and their hydroxy analogs. The latter group have recently been re-classified as feed additives under the new feed additives regulation.

The Directive contains provisions governing the authorization, labelling and use of bioproteins when marketed as such and also when incorporated in compound feeds.
The Annex to the consolidated version of Directive 82/471/EEC contains an up to date list of the products currently authorized under the Directive.
